Olive Foster Outstanding Teacher Award

Recognizing excellence in Illinois teaching and the preservation of Prairie State history in the classroom.

Named in honor of the esteemed Illinois State Historian, Olive Foster, the award honors excellence in teaching at the elementary, middle, and secondary levels. It acknowledges those who demonstrate a profound commitment to educational innovation and the preservation of Illinois' rich cultural heritage.

About this
Award

Recipients of this award actively promote Illinois history—from indigenous peoples to recent immigrants—in schools andtheir local communities, using the resources of one or more local historical societies, museums, the Illinois State HistoricalSociety, and other Illinois-based historical organizations. This annual award of $1,000 celebrates the accomplishments of a full-time teacher at an elementary school, middle school, junior high school, or high school for developing and implementingoutstanding ways of engaging students in their study of Illinois history.

Application Criteria & Excellence

Nominations may be made by any group or person and should be accompanied by the following information:

  • Nominee’s name and address

  • Nominee’s subject and grade level

  • Nominator’s name and contact information

  • The school where the teacher is employed

  • Contact information for the school’s principal

  • Nominee’s educational background

  • Nominee’s professional experience

  • A narrative description of the nominee’s outstanding classroom accomplishments. This should include specific history units taught by the nominee and information about the involvement of local museums, historical societies, or other local history organizations. Digital supporting documentation (e.g., YouTube videos of the teacher teaching, students’ projects, etc.) will also be accepted. Commentary on the results or impact of the programs and how they were developed may be included. Other awards won by the nominee or nominee’s students should also be included.

  • Letter of support or recommendation.​

Judging Committee & Application

​The Society’s Education Committee will judge nominations and select the winner.

This award honors Olive Foster, former Illinois State Historian, Director of the School Services Program, and originator of the Illinois History Program for students.

The award will be presented at the Illinois State Historical Society’s Annual Awards Banquet in April of 2025.
